Human is by far the best option as it allows you to play with Relentless in a lot of matchups while still having Every Man for Himself for break out of stuns
Horde
Best race:
Undead is the only Horde race that provides any competitive benefit for disc priests with Will of the Forsaken allowing you to break out of a fear effect which can be the deciding factor in some games
ALTERNATIVE TALENTS
Castigation provides a more stable increase to both damage and healing for games where you want a consistent increase to your throughput such as against high spread pressure whereas Twist of Fate is better for healing heavy single target pressure
Masochism should be used if you expect to be targeted by the opposing team
Shining Force should be taken over Psychic Voice if you don’t intend to frequently push in for fears or expect to be trained and want the additional tool for peeling yourself – it can also be used offensively to counter zonal defensive cooldowns, such as Earthen Wall Totem, Anti-Magic Zone and Darkness

- Gladiator’s Medallion should be used in matchups where you need to break out of important crowd control, such as Blind against rogues
- Relentless is usually a great pick when playing as a human and can even be considered as undead in matchups with lots of small consistent crowd control, such as against destruction warlocks

- Premonition should be taken against mages, hunters and occasionally warlocks to break out of crowd control
- Purification is a niche pick that can help keep your team out of crowd control when facing mages – it’s also really effective when facing elemental shamans and balance druids as spam dispelling will greatly reduce their damage
- Ultimate Radiance can be taken in 2s to help survive against double dps comps
- Archangel can be necessary in 2s to help you out heal damage when being trained by unholy death knights
Major
- Vitality Conduit – incredibly strong major essence for all healers that should be used when you need additional healing output or simply an extra defensive cooldown to help your team survive against opposing crowd control chains
- The Crucible of Flame – primarily taken as a more offensive option in 2s and occasionally in 3s if you don’t need the added single target healing from Vitality Conduit
Minor
- The Formless Void – can be taken over Spirit of Preservation when facing comps that don’t have a lot of burst and you’ll mostly rely on your Atonement healing, such as against double caster teams
BiS
- 3x Heart of Darkness
- 1x Depth of Shadows
- 1x Death Throes
- 1x Weal and Woe
- Alternative: 1x Moment of Repose – good against comps that stun you and deal high burst damage
- Versatile – your best choice for the passive increase to one of your favored stats
- Surging Vitality – alternate pick to proc one of your best stats
- Gushing Wound – excellent choice to increase your damage for very little corruption
- Twisted Appendage – can deal decent damage if it procs during your teams lockdown
- Forbidden Obsidian Claw – by far your best trinket for both creating pressure and for the mana you get on each tick
- Revitalizing Voodoo Totem – another must have trinket which can counter an enemy kill attempt and can even be used while locked out
